Project Description
The ongoing digitalization and developments in technology and artificial intelligence (AI) present new challenges for colleges and universities. One challenge is to develop new digital forms of learning and teaching that meet the demands of today’s world. On the other hand, in light of the expected rising costs and demands, there arises the question of how digital technologies can enhance the performance and quality of the education system itself. In particular, applications in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) prove to be promising in this regard.
The project is based on the conviction that the question of how an ethically responsible use of AI-based technologies in higher education organizations can be achieved cannot be answered solely from the perspective of data protection and justice. It is also essential to engage with the goals and ideals associated with the understanding of education in higher education institutions, as well as the impacts of using AI-based technologies on this understanding of education. This is because understandings of education are not static; they change in relation to societal, cultural, technological, and social factors. Our thesis is that educational technologies not only rely on societal understandings of education but can also shape and change these understandings to varying degrees.
Therefore, the project focuses on the ethical analysis of the use of AI-based educational technologies in higher education by examining whether and how these technologies impact our understanding of education, how this change can be evaluated, and how this can be incorporated into an ethical analysis of AI educational technologies in higher education.
