Prof. Dr. Alexander Filipović is a university professor of social ethics at the Institute for Systematic Theology and Ethics within the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Vienna. He has served as vice dean since 2022 and will become dean of the faculty in October 2026.
Alexander Filipović, born in 1975 in Duderstadt in the Eichsfeld region (Germany), is a social ethicist specializing in media ethics, technology ethics, political ethics, and philosophical pragmatism. After studying Catholic theology, communication science, and German language and literature, Alexander Filipović earned his doctorate in 2006 with a dissertation on media ethics in Bamberg. His habilitation thesis at the University of Münster in 2012 explored fundamental questions of Christian social ethics in dialogue with philosophical pragmatism. At the Institute for Christian Social Sciences at the University of Münster, he served as editor of the Yearbook for Christian Social Sciences from 2009 to 2013. From 2013 to 2021, he was a professor of media ethics at the Munich School of Philosophy. Since 2012, he has been co-editor of the media ethics journal Communicatio Socialis (http://www.communicatio-socialis.de).
Alexander Filipović maintains a blog (http://www.unbeliebigkeitsraum.de) and is a member of the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK). From 2018 to 2020, he served as an expert member of the German Bundestag’s Enquete Commission on Artificial Intelligence, and from 2011 to 2021 he was an advisor to the German Bishops’ Conference. Additionally, he was a partner at the management consulting firm dimension2 economics & philosophy GmbH until 2025.
